CHOOSE YOUR UNDERWEAR WISELY

Everybody loves a good urban legend, be it Sasquatch, the Loch Ness Monster, or dead celebs secretly walking among us; but one of these myths isn’t exactly fun to ponder - the impact that underwear has on our sperm count.

Although the research is still emerging and not completely certain yet, we do have a better understanding of the validity of this tall "tail" based on recent studies and the known mechanics of the male biology.

This guide gives you the rare opportunity to swap out your tin foil hat for a lab coat and uncover some basic male biology, learn the truth about this myth of men from established researchers, answer commonly asked questions on the topic, and once and for all, discover the best type of underwear to use as testicles receptacles.

WHAT IMPACTS SPERM PRODUCTION AND MALE FERTILITY

Research has shown that a variety of lifestyle choices that can help men to protect their testes and produce healthy sperm, and other habits that can hinder sperm counts.

To positively impact total sperm count and production, focus on maintaining a healthy weight & diet, practice safe sex to prevent STDs, keep your stress levels low, and regularly exercise.

With that said, avoiding unhealthy lifestyle choices is just as important; if you’re looking to supercharge the boyz and improve semen quality, then do your best to steer clear of smoking, staying in hot tubs for long periods of time, excessive alcohol and drug use, artificial lubricants, and exposure to toxic chemicals.

But of all these testes do’s and testicles don’ts, the biggest factor in your sperm production is also directly related to your choice in boxers or briefs; increased scrotal temperatures from body heat.

WHY YOU SHOULD KEEP YOUR BAWLZ COOL

For the testes to do their job and pump out strong seed, their temperature has to be lower than your core body temperature; this is why the scrotum has evolved to hang away from the abdomen.

This information comes from several experimental studies showing that certain occupations and lifestyles associated with prolonged exposure to high levels of heat negatively affects sperm concentration and sperm motility.

Motility is the little guys’ ability to move around and “secure the bag”, so to speak.

With that said, there isn’t a single temperature for your testicles; anything three to four degrees cooler than a man's normal body temperature of 98.6°F should do the trick, and this is why certain types of boxers are vital to maintaining this temperature range.

HOW CERTAIN UNDERWEAR AFFECTS SPERM PRODUCTION

To recap, in order to produce strong swimmers of high quality, your testicles need to be kept cooler than your body temperature and away from the abdomen. This is why your bawlz evolved to dangle, and is also the reason why super tight underwear is no bueno.

When men wear boxers or briefs that are too tight, it pushes the scrotum closer to the abdomen. This in turn increases scrotal temperatures, which ultimately negatively impacts sperm production.

It’s simple, straightforward, and backed by this study published by Harvard researchers in the health journal Human Reproduction back in August 2018 which featured over 600 males struggling with infertility seeking treatment at a fertility clinic in an effort to get their wife or girlfriend pregnant. After evaluating the health of their semen levels and follicle stimulating hormone production, the research showed that men who mainly wore boxers or boxer briefs had 25% higher sperm concentrations than men who did not primarily wear boxers.

WHICH TYPE OF UNDERWEAR IS BAD FOR SPERM COUNT?

Simply put, any underwear worn that is either too small or too tight is bad for sperm production health as it pulls the testes in which increases their temperature. Avoid briefs (like tighty whiteys) and boxer briefs that are either too tight or aren’t designed with sufficient dangling space.

THE BEST TYPE OF UNDERWEAR FOR SPERM PRODUCTION

Boxer briefs that are breathable, comfortable, and secure around the groin - but not tight - are the best option. Breathability allows for a cooler temperature, comfort reduces stress, and a fit that allows for natural “droop and sway” that keeps testes away from the body. Loose boxer shorts or loose fitting underwear works too, but they aren’t as hygienic or comfortable as the right pair of boxer briefs.

FAQS

DOES TYPE OF UNDERWEAR AFFECT SPERM COUNT?

Yes, boxers or briefs that are too tight, or wearing loose fitting boxer shorts with tight pants, pushes your testicles up close to the body and can negatively impact male fertility health and lower sperm count. However, wearing tight boxers has not been shown to lower sperm counts to the point of infertility.

DOES TIGHT UNDERWEAR HARM SPERM COUNT?

Yes, tight fitting underwear has been shown to negatively affect male fertility health, sperm concentration, sperm count, and sperm motility by jamming testicles up against your leg or abdomen. In other words, increased scrotal temperatures from wearing tighter underwear can result in less tadpoles in the puddle, and the tadpoles that are there aren’t very strong swimmers.
